App Store screenshot best practices that actually move installs

The first two screenshots do most of the work on your product page. Here is how to make them count.

What makes a good App Store screenshot?

A good App Store screenshot leads with an outcome rather than an interface, carries a headline of about six words or fewer, keeps text at least 10% away from every edge, and matches the rest of the set in font, position, and background. The first two frames matter most, because most visitors never scroll past them.

On this page

Most visitors to your App Store listing never scroll. They see your icon, your title, and the first two screenshots — then they decide. Everything after that is for the small minority who are already interested.

That makes your first two frames the highest-leverage design work on the whole product page.

Lead with the outcome, not the interface#

A screenshot of your settings screen tells nobody anything. A screenshot that says "Track every subscription in one place" over a clean summary view tells someone whether your app solves their problem.

Write the headline first. If you cannot write a headline for a screen, that screen probably does not belong in your set.

Keep headlines under about six words#

Long headlines get rendered at a size nobody can read in a thumbnail. Six words is roughly the ceiling for staying legible at gallery scale.

Good:

  • Track every subscription in one place
  • Cancel before you get charged
  • Your whole month at a glance

Too long:

  • Easily keep track of all of your recurring subscriptions in one convenient dashboard

Respect the safe margins#

Apple crops screenshots differently across devices and contexts. Keep text and any critical UI at least 10% away from every edge. A headline that gets clipped on one device size undoes the whole set.

Stay consistent across the set#

A set reads as one thing or it reads as noise. Lock these before you render:

ElementDecide once
Headline font and weightOne family, one weight
Headline positionTop or bottom, never mixed
Background treatmentOne gradient or one solid system
Device frameSame model, same angle, same shadow
Margin rhythmOne spacing scale

Swipe to see all columns.

Do not repeat your icon#

Your icon already sits directly above the gallery. Spending a frame on it wastes one of your two high-value slots.

Test the thumbnail, not the full size#

Open your set on a phone and look at it the way a real visitor does — small, scrolling, distracted. If the headline is not readable at that size, it is not readable.

Frequently asked questions

How many App Store screenshots should I upload?
Apple allows up to ten per device size. Upload between four and six strong frames rather than padding the set — the first two do most of the work, and a weak later frame can undercut a strong opening.
Do screenshot headlines need to be short?
Yes. Keep headlines to roughly six words. Longer headlines render too small to read at gallery scale, which is the size most visitors actually see.
Should my app icon appear in a screenshot?
No. Your icon already sits directly above the gallery, so spending a frame on it wastes one of your two highest-value slots.
