How to make App Store screenshots before your app is live
You do not need a published listing to build a screenshot set. Here is what to use instead.

Can you make App Store screenshots before your app is published?
Yes. You do not need a live listing. Simulator captures, cleaned-up device screenshots, and frames pulled from screen recordings all work as source material. Fill the app with believable data first, decide your positioning before your layout, then pick one visual direction and apply it to the whole set.

Screenshot tools usually assume you already have an App Store page to scrape. If you are pre-launch, that is exactly the thing you do not have — and it is also the moment good screenshots matter most, because you are about to submit for review.
You can build a full set from material you already have.
What works as source material#
Simulator captures. The cleanest option. Xcode's simulator gives you pixel-perfect screens at exact device dimensions, with no status bar noise, no personal data, and no need to stage a real device.
Real device screenshots. Fine, with a caveat: clean up the status bar and scrub anything personal before uploading. Real devices do give you real content, which usually looks more convincing than placeholder data.
Screen recordings. Useful when the thing you want to show is a flow rather than a state. Pull individual frames from the moments that read clearly as stills.
Fill your app with believable data first#
The single biggest quality difference in pre-launch screenshots is the content
inside them. An empty state, Lorem ipsum, or three test entries named "asdf"
will sink an otherwise well-designed set.
Spend an hour populating your app with data that looks like a real person's: plausible names, realistic amounts, a sensible spread of dates. It reads immediately, even at thumbnail size.
Decide your positioning before your layout#
Before you think about gradients, answer these:
- Who specifically is this for?
- What is the one thing it does better than what they use now?
- What would make them stop scrolling?
Your headlines come out of those answers. The visual direction is downstream of the positioning, not the other way round.
Then pick a direction and commit#
Once you have your screens and your headlines, the remaining decision is style — premium and minimal, bold and conversion-focused, clean and product-first, or playful and visual. Any of them can work. Mixing them cannot.
AppShotKit works from uploads, no live listing required. Try it with your simulator captures.
